Strategic Planning Boosts Nonprofits' Performance and Results
Strategic planning is as crucial for nonprofit organizations as it is for businesses. Because of the unique characteristics of nonprofits, strategic planning is critical. The continual change of leadership at the board of directors level is one reason to use strategic planning.
As new board members assume their leadership role, it is essential that they have a very clear understanding of the organization’s core values, mission, vision, key strategic issues, goals, action strategies and measurement tools.
Thriving, being nimble and entrepreneurial in a continually changing environment are other important reasons for nonprofits to use strategic planning. Many nonprofits have only a few staff and depend upon board members and volunteers to actively move the organization towards its goals. Many nonprofits depend upon grant funding or fundraising to sustain programming. All of these endeavors benefit from the clear strategic thinking and plan of action that result from strategic planning.
The Center for Strategic Change has facilitated many nonprofits through the strategic planning process and board retreats. (Owner and lead facilitator Judy Whalen has extensive experience in nonprofit management having served as staff, executive director, lobbyist, board of directors member and volunteer for a number of nonprofit organizations.) We custom-designs the process to meet your specific needs and maximize your resources. A “one-size fits all” process does not work. We spend significant time upfront working with you to determine what you want to achieve, what resources are available and how committed you are to follow through. We incorporate your staff and board resources as much as you desire. We are open to having your staff or volunteers conduct whatever activities they have the capacity – time and expertise- to do. The Center for Strategic Change experts facilitate the process, design and implement the market research and work with you to support your implementation activities.
